Phil Foden has been unveiled as the Premier League Player of the Season

Phil Foden has won the Premier League 2023/24 Player of the Season award for Manchester City.

Foden, 23, has won the prestigious award after another outstanding season in which he has been at the heart of City’s bid for an unprecedented fourth successive league title.

In just 34 top-flight games, he has scored a career-high 17 goals and provided eight assists.

He was beaten to the title by fellow City player Erling Haaland, Arsenal trio Martin Odegaard (two assists), Declan Rice (one) and Chelsea striker Cole Palmer (one goal).

On the other end of the scale, Alexander Isak (one goal) from Newcastle, Ollie Watkins (two assists) from Aston Villa and Virgil Van Dijk (two goals) from Liverpool were also shortlisted for the award.

The winners were determined by a public vote and a Premier League panel.

This is Foden’s second award of the season after he was named Football Writers’ Association Footballer Of The Year on Thursday. Foden beat off competition from Rice and Rodri with 42 per cent of the vote, according to the FWA, made up of nearly 900 football journalists. Foden will be aiming to win his sixth top-flight title this weekend as City head into the last day of the season with West Ham needing to beat or better Arsenal’s result against Everton to secure the title. Next Saturday will see Foden face Manchester United in the FA Cup final.

Phil Foden has 24 goals and 10 assists in all competitions this season

Speaking on Thursday, Foden said: “It would mean everything to me after finishing last season and what we achieved then. We’re still in two competitions, we’ve got two finals left and we’ll give everything to try and achieve success and try and do the Premier League four times which has never been done before.”

It would mean a lot to us. It’s history and I don’t think I can ever see it being done again. It’s something the team knows, the team understands and we’re looking forward to trying to get it done.

In all competitions, he has scored 25 times and grabbed 11 assists in 51 matches. That includes another five goals in the Champions League, with Foden scoring in the quarter-final first-leg against Real Madrid.

Foden is set to be named in the England squad for Euro 2024 this summer. The Stockport-born playmaker has made 33 appearances for his nation, scoring four goals. He has started in each of their last five matches, including both friendlies against Brazil and Belgium in March.
